Colin Wade

At 2½ months, Colin was diagnosed with epilepsy. After gaining partial control of his seizures, at 4½ months, he was diagnosed with infantile spasms. This is another form of epilepsy that has a lasting effect. The spasms caused severe developmental delay and overall declined health. Since the diagnosis, Colin has had pneumonia twice, a severe stomach virus, and several upper respiratory and auditory infections which have lead him to multiple specialists to care for him. At 10½ months, he is currently under the care of a pulmonologist, gastro-enterologist, ENT, ophthalmologist, and neurologist. Due to his delays, Colin is barely able to sit on his own, eat pureed foods, or crawl, all things that a 10 month old should be doing. There is no solid prognosis for Colin's condition. We do not know if he will ever be able to do the things that all children should be able to do. Only time will tell.

For the past 5 months, Colin has had physical therapy weekly. He will soon be starting occupational therapy to increase independent function and speech therapy for feeding issues and oral motor stimulation. As you can imagine, Colin has been through more in 10 months than some people would experience in 10 years and he has a very long, challenging, and expensive journey ahead.

On a lighter note, we are pleased to report that within the 5 months of therapy sessions, Colin has made tremendous progress. Prior to physical therapy, Colin did not roll over, did not smile often, never laughed, nor had any interest in toys. Today, he does all of those things and is on his way to reaching those more difficult milestones that were previously mentioned like sitting independently and crawling. We are eager to see how much and how quickly he will progress with the addition of speech and occupational therapy. We thank God everyday for the gift He has given us in Colin. We are truly blessed to have been chosen to care for this very special baby boy. We pray that Colin continues to progress and that his future may be much brighter than the past.
